Beluga eDNA Filtering and Water Quality Testing

I got the opportunity to work with my professor, Debora Boege-Tobin, on her beluga eDNA monitoring. I learned how to retrieve eDNA and water quality samples, how to filter eDNA, and perform all water quality tests.

Skeletal Articulation with Lee Post

I worked with Lee Post(The Boneman) and other class mates to complete a full skeletal articulation of a beluga whale, along with an excavation of another complete beluga whale. The beluga that we articulated in displayed in the Museum of the North in Fairbanks, AK.

Stejneger Beaked Whale Skeletal Atlas Project & 2D/3D Bone Inventory Protocol

Completed and published the first ever skeletal atlas bone inventory protocol for a Stejneger beaked whale with Dr. Debbie Boege Tobin and Lee Post

Sea Otter Necropsies

I assisted with a sea otter necropsy with a veterinarian from the Alaska Sealife Center, helping determine possible cause of death and collecting internal samples for further research.

Humpback Whale Photo Identification

I worked with Winged Whale Research in Homer, Alaska to identify humpback whale individuals seen within Kachemak Bay using photographs and distinct markings on their tail fluke.

Beluga Monitoring

I worked Alaska Beluga Monitoring Partnership to complete tidal monitoring on the endangered Cook Inlet Beluga's to observe and record number of individuals seen, along with behaviors, and possible outside stressors.

Marine Ecology Education

I spent a summer teaching marine ecology to campers at a summer camp in Tenants Harbor, ME. I taught campers the basics of marine ecology in the Gulf of Maine including invertebrates, marine plants, geology, fishing, and coastal environments.
